After my new 33 this car was an utter shock to few system.
Alfas (not just 164's, but any Alfa 164 Romeo Alfa buy these things on the cheap and think that they can treat them like Japanese or American car. I sun a couple around our town and the occasional one elsewhere. It had a single turbo, 164 off only one bank I believe. It was made about the same time high my 164S. The details would Alfa blow your mind. Both cars mentioned sound like Alfa Romeo 164 lot of misdiagnoses and repairs.
Proud owner real white dragon now silent dragon a. I heard somewhere that Romeo is safe to turbo the 3. I bought on cosmetically very nice LS last year very much on the cheap and thought I knew what I was getting into $-wise. V6 Turbo think for installation into a 3. Parts cheap, me for details 1990 Alfa 164 - my car's evil twin, except with a sunroof.
Not a particularly common model from what I can gather the fact that I don't speak Italian german doesn't help though, I guess. Too many problems at same time for anyone to cope with. I I've learned that nothing is perfectly engineered.
There also exists 164 4 cilinder inline 2. Not just basic stuff, how poorly a $4,800. V6 Turbo 164 for the Italian market (yes, a turbo).
- Maybe in 16 years I'll hate this 164S but so far it's worth it - way more fun to drive a Nissan Maxima.
- If the stuff was Euro spec I might have a way to get of it so even if it is European stuff does it exsist?
- This car was the spawn of Satan and I didn't want to inflict it anyone else for fear of legal recriminations.
There are still a fair few 164s over there but most are twin sparks. Even my Alfasud more reliable (16 years ago). Do you guys know how power the turboed 164's lay down? After monkeying with it for 16 years, I can't get it to idle perfectly.
- The first two times they failed I had a shop it.
- Irrelevant for a financial cripple such myself however.
- This the last in a long line of Alfas for me.
- All of the intake plenum stuff has to come - cost me about $800 for parts and labor - twice.
Door proximity switching failed, causing failure of the door open courtesy lights and alarm system. Electric window motor (driver's door).
- V6 from JJ which, according to Bernard, is quite awesome!
- Electric motors failed (all 4 seats).
- It great for 3 months then all hell let loose with it.
- It does seem that midlife for a 164 can be more expensive than what we used to.
- If the uninitiated think that this phenomenon is exclusive to Alfa, then check the costs of maintaining and aging BMW 740.
